Palm Desert Bicycle Accident Lawyers of Coachella Valley
With today’s environment, bicycle riding is considered a healthy means of transportation. In addition, it helps to make the individual more physically active – it is good exercise. The rider does not have to hassle traffic, and it makes for a better quality of life for that individual – not to mention not having to pay for insurance, gasoline or maintenance. It is estimated that over 60 million people ride a bicycle during the year in the United States.
What causes a bicycle accident?
A bike accident usually happens when the rider or a motor vehicle driver close by is not paying attention to his or her surroundings. Many auto drivers do not respect a bicyclist’s right to share the road, while many bicyclists believe the auto driver should look out for them. If the auto driver is not paying attention, he or she can sideswipe the cyclist – causing him or her to fall of the bike and onto the road.
Factors that contribute to a bicycle accident include the speed the automobile and bicycle are traveling. Was the bicyclist wearing a helmet?
A bike accident can cause serious injuries, including fractures, head and/or brain injury, spinal cord damage, internal bleeding, paralysis and death.
Safety Rules
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has four safety rules that bicyclists should know before they take to the road. They include:
- Protect yourself: Always wear a helmet no matter how short the distance is you are traveling. It only takes one fall on concrete to cause a brain injury. California Vehicle Code §21212 states, “Riders under 18 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet while riding on a public road.”
- Be visible and alert – Always pay attention to your surroundings – keep your eyes on the road. Obey all traffic laws. California law requires a bicyclist to use lights and reflectors at night. It is wise to wear light or bright-colored clothing. California Vehicle Code §21201 states, “Using lights and reflectors at night is the law.”
- Ride with the traffic, not against it – On a one-way street, it is okay to ride on the left side as long as you are riding with the traffic.
- Control your bicycle – Inspect it regularly to make sure everything is operating the way it should be. California Vehicle Code §21200.5 states, It is unlawful to operate a bicycle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage or drugs. If you are convicted, you will face a fine of at least $250.”
Although riding a bicycle is a healthy means of transportation, the amount of protection is limited. If an accident takes place, serious injuries can be sustained – not to mention death.
